Art Terms

Original

An original piece of artwork, only one exists.

Limited Edition

An edition limited to a specified number of reproductions. Once all in the edition have sold, the edition then becomes sold out.

Signed & Numbered

This means that the artist has put his or her signature on the piece and also numbers the piece within that edition size. For example, a piece could be numbered 5/75, meaning that piece is the 5th reproduction of 75 reproduction pieces total.

Painters and Photographers are known to sign their artwork on the front of the piece, but will occasionally place the number or signature on the back.

Artist Proof

An artist proof usually denotes the very first pieces to be produced in a limited edition. Sometimes an artist proof also can mean that the artist had his or her hands on the piece more than other numbers within the edition size. Artist proofs are higher in value and more coveted than the same piece in the larger edition size.

Edition Variations

Within an edition, Tim Cotterill the “Frogman” will change a certain number of the whole edition size, specifically altering the colors and name of the frog. The Edition Variation sculpture (or EV ) will have the Edition Variation and it’s original edition size listed on the the piece.

Mixed Media

This form of art is when the artist creates a piece of work using more than one medium. For example, we have seen some of our painters create mixed media pieces that involve the use of collage elements in with their typical paint medium.

Blown Glass

Blown glass denotes any glass piece that has been formed using a process by which molten glass or heat-softened glass is formed and shaped from air being blown into that glass via a metal tube.

Cast Bronze

This means that bronze has been made into a shape from a mold. Molten bronze is usually poured into a plaster mold and “cast” into the shape the artist desires.

Certificate of Authenticity

A document that shows the title of the piece of artwork, as well as the edition number and size (if the piece has one) , a date that a piece was purchased, and an official signature of both the artist and a representative of the gallery where you purchased.

Appreciation of Value

This means that the value of a piece of artwork may go up in time, due to circumstances such as an edition selling out, or the public’s desire for a specific piece.
